Article Configuration

Overview

The Article Configuration section allows publishers and Journal Managers to define the types of manuscripts accepted by the journal and configure the corresponding peer review and plagiarism requirements.

Each article type can have its own review workflow and submission rules.

Article Type

Select the article types accepted by your journal.

Administrators can choose from predefined article types such as:

• Original Research
• Review Article
• Case Study
• Editorial
• Short Communication
• Commentary 
• Letter to the Editor

If a required article type is not available, administrators can create custom article types.

Creating a New Article Type

To add a custom article type:

1. Click the Article Type field.

2. Enter the new article type.

3. Press Enter or click Add.

This flexibility allows journals to support specialized submission categories based on their publishing requirements.

Review Type

After selecting an article type, assign the peer review model that will be used for that article category.

Supported review models include:

• Open Review - Author and reviewer identities are visible to each other.

• Single-Blind Review - Reviewer identities remain anonymous to authors.

• Double-Blind Review - Both author and reviewer identities remain anonymous throughout the review process.Different article types can use different review models depending on journal policy.

Similarity Proof Configuration

The Similarity Proof is a plagiarism detection report generated using plagiarism detection tools such as Turnitin, iThenticate, or other supported similarity-checking software. It helps editors assess the originality of a submitted manuscript before proceeding with the peer review process.

For each Article Type, administrators must configure how the Similarity Proof will be handled during the editorial workflow.

Available Options

• Mandatory - A Similarity Proof must be uploaded or updated by the Editorial User before the manuscript can proceed to the next stage of the editorial workflow. This ensures that every submission undergoes plagiarism verification.

• Optional - The Similarity Proof may be uploaded by the Editorial User, but it is not mandatory. Editorial staff can decide whether a similarity report is required based on the journal's editorial policy or the nature of the submission.

• Not Required - No Similarity Proof is required for the selected article type. The manuscript can proceed through the workflow without a plagiarism report.

Adding Additional Configurations

To configure additional combinations of:

• Article Type
• Review Type
• Similarity Proof Requirement

Click Add New (+) and repeat the configuration process.

This enables journals to support multiple submission workflows within a single journal.

Tracking ID Configuration

Overview

Tracking IDs provide every manuscript with a unique submission identifier, making it easier for editors, reviewers, production teams, and authors to monitor manuscripts throughout the publishing lifecycle.

A well-defined tracking format ensures consistency, simplifies record management, and improves submission tracking.

Submission Tracking ID Prefix

Enter a unique prefix for your journal.

The prefix may represent:

• Journal Acronym
• Publisher Name
• Publication Year

Example: JSTI-0001

Sequence Starting Number

Specify the starting number for your journal's manuscript tracking sequence.

This setting is particularly useful when migrating from an existing Journal Management System, allowing you to continue your existing submission numbering without interruption.

For example, if your previous system's last submission ID was 588, you can set the Sequence Starting Number to 589. The next manuscript submitted through Kryoni JMS will automatically be assigned the tracking ID based on this sequence.

Examples:

• Sequence Starting Number: 001 → First submission: JSTI-001
• Sequence Starting Number: 589 → First submission after migration: JSTI-589

This ensures continuity in manuscript tracking, preserves historical consistency, and prevents duplicate submission IDs during system migration.

Tracking Number Digits

Choose the number of digits to be used in the tracking sequence.

Examples:

• 4 digits JSTI-0001
• 6 digits JSTI-000001

Important

warning

Once the Tracking ID configuration has been saved, it cannot be modified. Verify all values carefully before finalizing the configuration.

Allow Editorial Users to Change the Review Type

This setting determines whether Editorial Users can modify the predefined review type while assigning reviewers to a manuscript.

Enabled - Editorial Users can override the default review model configured for the selected article type. This provides additional flexibility when handling special cases or manuscripts requiring a different review approach.

Disabled - Editorial Users must follow the predefined review type configured during the Article Configuration stage. The review model cannot be changed during reviewer assignment.

Recommendation: Enable this option if your journal requires flexibility in handling different submission scenarios. Disable it if maintaining a standardized peer review process is a priority.

Allow Submission to Proceed Before Co-author Verification

This option determines whether a manuscript can move to the next stage of the editorial workflow before all co-authors have verified their participation.

Enabled - The manuscript can proceed even if one or more co-authors have not yet completed the verification process. This helps reduce delays and allows the editorial workflow to continue without waiting for all co-author confirmations.

Disabled - The manuscript cannot proceed to the next workflow stage until every listed co-author has completed the required verification. This ensures complete author accountability and confirms that all contributors have acknowledged their involvement before editorial processing begins.

Recommendation: Enable this option if faster manuscript processing is preferred. Disable it if your journal requires mandatory co-author verification before editorial review.

Collect Colour Figure Information

This setting determines whether authors are required to provide information about colour figures during manuscript submission.

This option is particularly useful for journals that publish print editions or charge additional fees for colour printing.

Enabled - Authors must specify the number of colour figures included in their manuscript during submission.

The collected information can be used to:

• Calculate colour printing charges.
• Inform authors of any additional publication costs.
• Support pricing calculations for print production.

Disabled - Authors are not asked to provide colour figure information, and no colour figure charges are calculated during submission.

Recommendation: Enable this option if your journal charges authors for colour figures in printed publications.

Production System Integration (Post-Acceptance Tracking)

This setting determines whether the Production System should be integrated with the Journal Management System (JMS) after a manuscript has been accepted for publication.

Yes - Enabling this option creates a seamless connection between the editorial and production workflows. Once a manuscript is accepted, it is automatically transferred to the Production System, where all post-acceptance activities can be managed within the same platform through a task-based workflow.

The production team can efficiently assign, track, and complete production tasks

Each task is assigned to the appropriate team member, allowing the entire production workflow to be monitored from a centralized dashboard with real-time status updates.

By integrating the Production System with JMS, publishers can:

• Eliminate manual handovers between editorial and production teams.
• Reduce lengthy email communication and scattered file exchanges.
• Improve collaboration through a centralized task management system.
• Track the progress of every production task in real time.
• Ensure accountability with task ownership and workflow tracking.
• Accelerate the publication process through automated workflow transitions. 
• Maintain complete visibility of the manuscript from submission through final publication.

No - If this option is disabled, production activities will not be integrated with Kryoni JMS.

Conflict of Interest (COI) Declaration

This setting determines whether authors must submit a Conflict of Interest (COI) Declaration as part of the manuscript submission process.

Yes (Enabled) - Authors are required to submit a completed COI declaration before finalizing their manuscript submission.

Administrators must upload the journal's official Conflict of Interest Declaration Form, which authors can download, complete, and upload during submission.

This helps journals comply with international publishing ethics and transparency standards.

No (Disabled) - Authors can submit manuscripts without providing a Conflict of Interest declaration.

Recommendation: It is strongly recommended to enable this option, especially for journals that follow ethical publishing standards such as COPE, ICMJE, or other international publishing guidelines.

Finalizing the Workflow Configuration

After reviewing and configuring all workflow and submission settings, click Next
